A high July electric bill does not automatically mean the AC is failing. Tucson bills rise when the weather is hotter, rates change, people stay home more or the thermostat is set lower. Before buying equipment, compare the right things.
Start with hours and temperature, not dollars
Look at kilowatt-hours on the bill, not just the amount due. Compare the same month from prior years and check average outdoor temperature if available. A rate increase can raise the bill even when usage is flat.
Next, think about the house. Guests, school schedules, cooking, pool equipment and EV charging can change summer consumption. Make sure the thermostat schedule was not altered and that doors or windows are not being left open.
Signs the cooling system deserves attention
Call for diagnosis when higher use arrives with longer run time, weaker airflow, uneven rooms, ice, new noise or an indoor temperature that drifts above the setting. Check the filter first. A packed filter is easy to correct; a dirty coil, duct leak, blower problem or low refrigerant requires testing.
Do not accept “it needs refrigerant” as the end of the explanation. Refrigerant is contained in the system. If it is low, the leak and the condition of the equipment should be discussed.
Small changes that do not require HVAC work
Keep blinds closed against direct afternoon sun, use reasonable thermostat setbacks and avoid adding heat through the oven during the hottest part of the day. Seal obvious door gaps and confirm attic insulation is not missing over problem rooms. These changes will not repair broken equipment, but they reduce avoidable load.
